Hey GYM!

This April, Dr. Rick Cornish will be the speaker for our Grace Baptist Church Annual Men's Retreat.  Dr. Cornish once pastored the church I attended when I was a wee lad.  He is a gifted preacher, theologian, and defender of the Christian faith. He's also a godly father of two boys, and when they were in jr. high and high school, he had weekly devotions with them.  During those devotions, he would try to answer their questions about the Bible, Church history, and Christian apologetics (i.e., reasons to be a Christian).  Eventually, those devotions became three books:  The Five Minute Theologian, the Five Minute Christian Apologist, and the Five Minute Church Historian.

In the first book, he answers questions like, "What does the Bible mean when it talks about atonement?  Sanctification?  The inerrancy of Scripture?"  In the second book, he talks about key moments in the life of the Church, like the Council of Nicea, the Reformation, and the Great Awakening.  In the third book, he answers questions like, "Why should I believe in God?", "Is the Bible reliable?"  and "What about other religions?"

The subtitle of all three books is "Maximum Truth in Minimum Time."  In other words, these great lessons can be read quickly.  Therefore, they make great books to read for your daily devotionals!

Parents, are you looking for books to go through with your children?  I heartily recommend Dr. Cornish's books!  Students, are you looking for devotional books to read on your own?  Try these!

Every Christian should have a basic understanding of Christian teaching, history, and philosophy.  These books provide that understanding in a simple way!

Continuing with our plan to enhance the teaching ministry of the GYM, Pastor Vaughn has released another episode of the GYMcast.  The current series, “Spiritual Q&A with Your Un-Spiritual BFF” is meant to help equip the students to enter into spiritual conversations with their non-Christian friends.  To hear the second episode, “Who Am I? Part 1?, follow the link below:

In order to enhance the teaching ministry of the GYM, Pastor Vaughn has begun a podcast, appropriately titled “the GYMcast.”  Podcast episodes will address all sorts of spiritual topics, from Bible study and evangelism to apologetics and spiritual disciplines.  The first series of the GYMcast is meant to supplement our current summer Wednesday night series, “Spiritual Q & A with your Un-Spiritual BFF,”  a series that helps equip the students to enter into spiritual conversations with their non-Christian friends.  To hear the first episode, follow the link below:

In High School Bible Hour, Mr. Humes just completed a wonderful series on the Life of Joseph.

Since Christianity is a *historical* faith (I.e., the Bible insists that the events in the Scriptures actually happened, as opposed to them being purely mythological) I thought it would be interesting for y’all to read this article, in which the author discusses the archeological background and evidence for the story of Joseph.

Please note: when it comes to archeological discoveries that support the Bible, some well-meaning but misguided Christians overstate the quality of the evidence.   This is unfortunate.  The Bible proves itself to be reliable in the face of all kinds of scrutity.  There is no need to make things up.  That said, I think you will find the following article well-reasoned,  sober in its assessments, but nevetheless exciting and encouraging!

A while ago, I delivered a message entitled “All Eyes on the Heroes” based on Philippians 3:17-21. You can find that message here.

We are definitely living during a time when there seems to be a scarcity of true God-honoring, Christ-centered, Church-loving heroes. I would love for the students in Grace Youth Ministries to become part of a Hero Generation that would rescue our nation from the clutches of its own self-centeredness and idolatry and inspire allegiance to the greatest Hero of all: Jesus of Nazareth.

For some fun inspiration, check out this video by my brother Lance:
